Landmarks.

When you move to a new town, there is a period of time when people refer to specific locations, using landmarks to identify them more accurately. This technique of describing occurs regardless of whether you are looking for somewhere to get a haircut or hiking a trail only locals know about. Usually, you just smile and nod and then have to spend time on Google later trying to decode what they were referring to. I've lived in the Pass for nearly two years and feel mostly familiar with this region's iconic human-made and natural landmarks that make this community unique. When someone references a place to another newcomer and I recognize it, it's a joyful glimmer of feeling like a local.
